Physical Overhead Protection
Physical Barrier
Physical barriers including camouflage nets, overhead wire obstacles, cage armor, and improvised overhead covers designed to prevent drone-dropped munitions and FPV strikes from reaching targets. The simplest and most immediately available protection.
How It Works
Physical structures — netting, wire mesh, wooden/metal overhead covers, cage armor on vehicles — create a physical barrier between the drone and its target. Nets can entangle rotors, wire obstacles force drones to fly higher (into detection), and overhead cover detonates munitions away from personnel/equipment.
Technical Specifications
range
Point defense only (covers specific position/vehicle)
cost
$50-$5,000 per installation
deployment Time
30 min - several hours
crew Required
2-6 personnel for installation
weight
5-500 kg (varies by type)
power Requirement
None
Advantages
- + Extremely cheap and immediately available
- + Works against ALL drone types — no electronic dependency
- + Cannot be jammed, spoofed, or electronically defeated
- + Provides passive protection 24/7 without operators
- + Can be built from locally available materials
- + Concealment also reduces visual detection by drones
Disadvantages
- − Only protects fixed positions — not mobile forces
- − Labor-intensive to construct
- − Slows unit movement and repositioning
- − Can be defeated by multiple strikes to the same point
- − Limits friendly observation and fields of fire
- − Heavy munitions can penetrate light covers
Tactical Deployment Tips
- ▸ Install overhead protection on all static positions immediately
- ▸ Use cage armor on vehicles in drone-heavy areas
- ▸ Combine concealment with physical protection (camo nets + wire)
- ▸ Create standoff gaps between nets and protected assets
- ▸ Regularly improve and maintain protective structures
Limitations & Vulnerabilities
- ⚠ Only protects what it covers — gaps are exploitable
- ⚠ Cannot protect moving forces
- ⚠ Requires constant maintenance
- ⚠ Heavy strikes can penetrate
