Decoys / Signature Management
Using decoy targets, IR flares, radar reflectors, and thermal signature reduction to confuse drone targeting systems. Prevents drones from identifying real targets by presenting false ones or reducing the signature of actual assets.
How It Works
Inflatable decoy vehicles/equipment mimic the visual and thermal signature of real assets. IR flares can distract heat-seeking guidance. Radar corner reflectors create false returns. Thermal blankets reduce the heat signature of real equipment. Together, these measures increase the number of potential targets the drone must discriminate between.
Technical Specifications
Advantages
- + Forces enemy to waste drones on fake targets
- + Cheap decoys vs expensive drones — favorable cost exchange
- + Works against visual, thermal, and radar-guided systems
- + No electronic signature from passive decoys
- + Can be deployed in large numbers quickly
- + Improves survivability of real assets
Disadvantages
- − Sophisticated AI may distinguish real from fake
- − Requires realistic decoys — poor quality is easily spotted
- − Must be repositioned regularly to remain convincing
- − Does not stop the drone — only misdirects it
- − Active decoys require power/maintenance
- − Close inspection by loitering drones can reveal fakes
Tactical Deployment Tips
- ▸ Mix real and decoy positions to force the enemy to investigate all
- ▸ Use thermal emitters in decoys to fool IR-equipped drones
- ▸ Change decoy positions frequently to prevent pattern recognition
- ▸ Deploy radar corner reflectors to saturate enemy ISR
- ▸ Use signature reduction on real assets simultaneously
Limitations & Vulnerabilities
- ⚠ Advanced AI/ML targeting may defeat simple decoys
- ⚠ Requires continuous effort to maintain deception
- ⚠ Ineffective against drones with human operators who can inspect closely
