Next-generation FPV drone that trails a thin fibre-optic cable instead of using RF video or control links. Completely immune to RF jamming, GPS spoofing, and every form of electronic warfare — the single most difficult drone type to counter with existing technology. Tactical employment mirrors the standard FPV workflow (operator with goggles, spotter, launch team 4–10 km behind the line of contact) but with two decisive differences: the aircraft can fly directly through an active jamming umbrella that would ground every RF-controlled drone in the same airspace, and it emits no exploitable radio signature at all, so passive RF geolocation of the operator is blind. Standard employment against armoured vehicles, command posts, artillery positions, and infantry in dugouts is now routine, and the type is displacing conventional FPV kamikazes on high-value missions inside dense electronic-warfare bubbles. The defensive problem is that every soft-kill layer in the C-UAS stack — RF jamming, GPS spoofing, RF geolocation, cyber takeover — falls to zero effectiveness against this platform, forcing engagement into hard-kill only: shotguns and small arms at short range, anti-drone nets and tunnels over fixed positions, physical overhead cover, vision-guided interceptor drones, and high-power microwave systems that damage the airframe's flight electronics regardless of the control link. Fibre-optic drones remain physically constrained — the cable can snag on trees, wires and rubble, cannot execute tight reversals, and adds weight that reduces agility — and terminal engagement by shotgun teams cued by acoustic and AI-vision detectors is currently the most consistent lethal counter at squad level. Recent combat observations: cable-guided FPVs now standard kit on both sides of the Russo-Ukrainian front with spool ranges extended from ~10 km in late 2023 to 20–40 km by 2026, first strikes reaching Kharkov city limits in February 2026 (RBC-Ukraine, Atlantic Council), the U.S. Army CALL and NATO both formally flagging fibre-optic FPVs as a C-UAS challenge without a mature counter (Aug 2025, May 2025), high-power microwave interception demonstrated against a fibre-optic target in U.S. government tests (Dec 2025), and Hezbollah adopting Ukraine-style fibre-optic FPVs against IDF troops in southern Lebanon from May 2026 — the first Ukraine-war doctrine to cross into the Middle East (BBC, Jerusalem Post, Alma Center).
